Success . . . Where you at, sis?
Oh the ever elusive success — what a tricky little bastard you are. I mean, aren’t we ALL searching for it? (Clearly a rhetorical question, but a valid one nonetheless). For me, the most challenging part of achieving it is it’s nature of subjectivity, as what one person defines as successful may not align with your own perspective. This is totally okay, as success is not, and shouldn’t be, a one-size-fits-all kinda thang — #amirite? Not to mention, one must take the time to define what success means to them before they can even achieve it. I don’t know about you but, l’ll admit, this is what I struggle with THE MOST.
Although we all have (or are currently working on) our own definitions of what success is — based on our priorities, values and what have you —I strongly believe there are fundamental practices we can start immediately to attribute to whatever it is we’re setting out to achieve. Below are a few things you can start today. Not tomorrow, but TODAY, Sis.
1 – Tell Your Story
Regardless of what you do or what field you’re in, people want to connect with YOU and YOUR story. They want to know how you got where you are, and why you do what you do — especially if you’re your own brand. So tell people! This doesn’t mean you have to tell all your dirty secrets, but you never know who will connect, or even be inspired, by your story. So don’t hesitate to share!
2 – Set Bite-sized Goals
Thinking of everything you need to accomplish can be quite daunting and downright overwhelming. I have a tendency to shutdown when I feel like I’m drowning in tasks. Therefore, I’ve found that breaking down my big goals into smaller, bite-sized goals has been extremely helpful to my overall productivity. This helps me to chip away at my goal(s) at a faster rate, and ultimately achieve them more quickly!
3 – Get an Accountability Partner
I don’t know about you, but I NEED to be held accountable for everything I do — mostly because if it’s left up to me, I’ll just procrastinate my life away until the task becomes obsolete or I die, whichever comes first. So it’s always super helpful to have a tribe, or at least 1 friend, who not only understands your hustle, but encourages you to follow through on your goals so you can be more successful.
4 – Show Gratitude
It’s really easy to focus on what’s going wrong in our lives, but try changing the way you look at things, and watch the things you look at change! It’s really that simple. Instead of focusing on the bad, start shifting that focus to the good. This will help you start each day with gratitude, and ultimately, make you happier!
5 – Stop Stressing
Listen, Britney… I get it. Because listen …. life is hard. Do you know how close I’ve come to strolling in the barbershop and shaving off all my hair?! Well, not that close actually, but you get the point. The hustle is HARD. And it’s super easy to get overwhelmed with stress. But here’s the thing, why stress over things that are not in your control? It’s pointless, right?! Just focus on what you can change, and stop stressing about what you can’t. Everything will work out in the end anyway, so take it easy on yourself. You got this!
6 – Follow Through
Do what you say you’re gonna do. Period. Stop writing down all these tasks and creating all these goals, just to sit back and watch them wither away into the abyss of your lack-of-follow-through. There’s nothing cute about NOT coming through with what you said you were going to do. So just get it done — plus, you’ll feel a lot better about yourself.
7- Be Fearless
Don’t allow fear to cripple you, or stop you from achieving whatever it is that you want. Period. Be clear about what you want and figure out how to get it. That’s pretty much the formula, guys. You’re welcome.
8 – Choose to be Happy
You heard me right — happiness is a CHOICE. If you didn’t know, you betta ask somebody. Seriously, it’s a total inside job — if you will — that you must work on every 👏🏾 single 👏🏾 day 👏🏾. So wake up in the morning and make a decision to be happy no matter what. This will work wonders for your life and career!
I hope this helps! Let’s get this success!
